Val Thorens Lift Pass Options - Winter

Lift Pass Options for Val Thorens - Winter

In winter there are various different passes on offer, and the choice can be bewildering. All passes are now hands-free and don't require photos - they stay in your pocket and you no longer need to show your pass to the lift attendants.  You can buy your pass online here.

Val Thorens Lift Pass

There are two local area ski passes; Val Thorens-Orelle (140 km of pistes : 8 black, 27 red, 26 blue, 8 green) and Vallée des Belleville (300 km of pistes and covers Val Thorens-Orelle and Les Menuires-St Martin). You can also buy a smaller area lift pass that covers just Les Menuires-St Martin.

Most beginners will buy one of these local area passes - you get the option of buying a one-day extension to the rest of the Three Valleys. The other alternative for beginners to is use the free beginner lifts for the first day or so, and then progress to buying a reduced rate beginner pass which give access to the gentler slopes. The disadvantage of this is that you will need to queue up each day to buy your day pass, and if you are in ski school lessons, your instructor may decide to take the group to another area which is not covered by your pass. It is generally less hassle to buy a week-long pass.

You can find prices and further details for all these various options on Val Thorens Lift Pass Prices - Winter.

3 Valleys Lift Pass

Intermediates and advanced skiers usually take advantage of the Three Valley pass which offers unlimited access to all 600km of pistes.  This is a great option for those who want to have a taster of the other Trois Vallées resorts of Méribel and Courchevel.

There are a number of great circuits you can do that take you in and out of the different resorts and allow you to travel further afield, see our Insider's Guide to the 3 Valleys to find out more.

Families & Kids Lift Passes
The French Ski School (ESF) offers children’s lessons with slightly cheaper lift passes included in the price.

Even better value is the Family Lift Pass which offers up to 20 percent savings for two parents and two or more children aged below 18 years, and can cover either the Val Thorens area or all Three Valleys. Please see our Winter Guide to find out what lift pass will best suit your family's needs.

During the summer months you can purchase a Val Thorens multi-activity card, which gives discounted access to a plethora of sports and fun activities. Some of the lifts also remain open throughout the summer, so hiking and biking can take the place of skiing. Please see our Summer Guide for details of lift pass prices and family ticket options.

Beginners Lift Passes & Free Lifts

The Vallée des Belleville ski area offers a special pass just for beginners - for a reduced rate you can access a variety of lifts that service a nice network of green and blue runs.  These include draglifts, chairlifts and gondolas; so you can practice getting on and off the lifts before you venture out into the more advanced ski areas!  You can purchase a ticket for a half day (€16,50) or a full day (€19).

There are also 4 free moving carpets in St Martin for those who want to find their ski legs before tackling lifts.

Val Thorens ski area also offers a 50% discount on half and full day passes, giving beginners access to the 2 Lacs chairlift and the Caim and Caron gondolas.  You can also use the 'du Retour', 'Roc' and 'Marmotton' draglifts and a magic carpet for free.

Lift passes are free for all those aged under 5 or over 75 years.  Proof of age will be required and you will still have to pick up a lift pass from the office to be able to access the lifts.

Discounted Rate & Pedestrian Passes
Generally, there are no discounts on lift passes for groups. The only exception is for ski clubs or associations and there are strict terms: the minimum number is 20 and the passes must be paid for by the club. Contact the lift pass company for more details.

For those of you wishing to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains without hurtling down them, it is possible to buy a pedestrian ticket at the base of any of the lifts. These special discounted lift passes give you access to all the Three Valleys lifts, handy if you want to join your skiing buddies for lunch on the mountain.

Lift passes are free for those over 75, and for the under fives (remember to bring proof of date of birth to qualify). There are reductions for children aged 5-12yrs and for those who are over 65.

A beginners ski pass gives access to the Roc drag lift, the 2 Lacs chair lift and to Cairn/Caron cable cars for 50% of the one day and half day public tariff.

There are three free drags lifts and one free moving carpet for beginners.

Lift Passes – Additional Information
You will need a photo for season passes, free passes and the 12 day option - and for all these your photo will be taken digitally at the lift pass office. Don't forget you can now order your passes in advance and have them sent to your home address or hotel / rental agency in the resort.

Spend an extra 3€ to get the reusable 'P@S' credit card sized lift pass. It is much more resistant to the snow than the 'throw away' type pass, and you can reuse it on your next holiday. You can even order it in advance and have it delivered to your home address, or arrange to have it delivered to your hotel / estate agency in the resort on your arrival. Keep the receipt - if your pass is lost or stolen the lift company will issue you with a new one with only a small admin fee to pay.

When you purchase your lift-pass you will be given the additional option to add insurance. Even if you have your own cover this is worth considering as it is a special ski insurance instantly recognised in France. Ask for 'assurance Carré Neige' - it has to be put onto the pass at the time of purchase.
