Meribel ski guide in crevasse fall

Lucky escape after a 20 metre fall into the glacier

A Meribel ski guide is probably counting his blessing this morning after falling 20 metres into a crevasse yesterday afternoon.

The 57 year old French guide was with clients on the Glacier de Gébroulaz at the time, when a snow bridge collapsed underneath him.

He fell into the crevasse and was only prevented from falling further by a narrowing in the glacier. Rescue teams said he was especially lucky since the crevasse was actually another 80 metres deep after this point.

It took an hour to winch the man from the crevasse after which he continued the descent to Meribel with his clients.
